Previous blood clots

Laboratory testing may include:
Complete Blood Count
A CBC provides information about the number of platelets and other blood cells.
PT/INR
Prothrombin time (PT) and INR assess part of the blood-clotting pathway and are commonly used in evaluating bleeding disorders and monitoring certain anticoagulant treatments.
aPTT
Activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) evaluates another part of the clotting system and may help identify deficiencies of certain clotting factors.
Fibrinogen Testing
Fibrinogen is a protein required for clot formation. Testing may be useful in selected bleeding or clotting conditions.
Clotting Factor Assays
Specific tests can measure the activity or levels of individual clotting factors, such as factor VIII or factor IX.
Von Willebrand Factor Testing
When von Willebrand disease is suspected, specialised tests may assess von Willebrand factor quantity and function.
Thrombophilia Testing
In selected patients with abnormal or recurrent clotting, testing for inherited or acquired thrombophilia may be considered.
Not everyone who develops a blood clot needs extensive thrombophilia testing. The decision depends on the patient's history and clinical circumstances.
Treatment of Coagulation Disorders
Treatment depends on the underlying condition and whether the primary problem is bleeding or abnormal clotting.
Treatment for Bleeding Disorders
Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include:
Clotting factor replacement
Desmopressin in selected conditions
Specific medicines that help control bleeding
Replacement of vitamin deficiencies
Platelet transfusions in selected situations
Treatment of the underlying disease
Treatment for Blood Clots
Anticoagulant medicines are commonly used to treat and prevent abnormal blood clots.
Depending on the situation, treatment may involve oral or injectable anticoagulants.
The choice and duration of treatment depend on factors such as the location of the clot, the cause of the clot, the risk of recurrence, kidney function, bleeding risk, and other individual factors.
Coagulation Disorders and Pregnancy
Pregnancy naturally changes the body's clotting system and can increase the risk of certain clotting complications.
Some women with known bleeding or clotting disorders may require specialised monitoring during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period.
Pregnancy-associated bleeding or clotting problems should be managed by an appropriate multidisciplinary medical team when necessary.
Coagulation Disorders and Surgery
Patients with known or suspected coagulation disorders may require additional evaluation before surgery or invasive procedures.
